Resolution establishing September 9th as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

The United Nations General Assembly on May 28 2020, adopted Resolution 74/275 establishing September 9th as International Day to Protect Education from Attack. This Resolution highlights the urgent need to safeguard education in times of conflict. UNESCO and UNICEF are designated co-facilitators of the annual observance, which serves as an opportunity to raise awareness and inspire action for the protection of education and the provision of support for students, teachers, and education communities in conflict zones.

  In 2025, six years after the first commemoration of International Day to Protect Education from Attack, armed conflict continues to escalate globally and attacks on education remain pervasive. Between 2022 and 2023, the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack reported approximately 6,000 attacks on students, educators, schools, and higher education institutions. This period also saw a 20% increase in the use of educational facilities for military purposes by parties to conflict. Over 10,000 students were killed, abducted, arrested, or otherwise harmed during this time. According to the 2025 UN Secretary-General’s Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict , there was a 44% increase in attacks against schools in 2024 compared to the previous year. Highlighting the Agenda of the Security Council on the situation of Children in Armed Conflicts.

The Agenda of the Security Council on:  Afghanistan  The United Nations verified 1,647 grave violations against 559 children (434 boys, 125 girls) and 244 grave violations that occurred in previous years.  The recruitment and use of 11 boys by the Taliban in combat (4) and support roles (7) was verified. The killing (180) and maiming (363) of 543 children (422 boys, 121 girls) was attributed to unidentified perpetrators (454), cross-border shelling and air strikes by Pakistan armed forces (50), the Taliban (22), Islamic State in Iraq and the LevantKhorasan (ISIL-KP) (10) and the National Resistance Front (NRF) (7). Casualties resulted mainly from explosive ordnance (491).  Sexual violence against 6 children (2 boys, 4 girls) was attributed to the Taliban (5) and unidentified perpetrators (1).
